On one long trip across the Pacific, several dozen inebriated passengers suddenly stood up and started gyrating wildly in the aisles—in complete silence. All of them were wearing headsets tuned to the same disco channel on the aircraft sound system.

The single led to the cover of Rolling Stone, two more songs for an NBC animated special, and then a full album of Jimmy’s “greatest hits,” produced and performed by, among others, Steve Cropper and his band mates from Booker T & the MGs (later to back up another faux act, the Blues Brothers). This, in turn, led to Jimmy’s second appearance on the cover of Rolling Stone, the only imaginary pop star ever to be so honored. That Jimmy’s output was strictly novelty music didn’t seem to dim his prospects.
