Students of military history know this was not an entirely unprecedented situation, but the example in question was interesting enough to merit a headline or two. Was the story about a high-tech stealth fighter? A particularly massive aircraft carrier? An amphibious rocket-submarine? Nope, nope, and heck no. The reports were about a baked good. Turns out the Army had created a twenty-six-page manual on how to bake a military brownie for inclusion in an MRE (meal, ready-to-eat). To be fair, the manual also addressed oatmeal cookies, and several pages dealt with the packaging requirements, but everyone seemed to agree twenty-six pages was a bit much.

They didn’t have airbags. They didn’t have any number of safety features that are now standard on even the least expensive models. These added safety components make today’s cars more complex than the cars our parents and grandparents drove, but there is little disagreement that the increased degree of safety also means they are better. Most seat belts are themselves quite simple. True, some restraints are more elaborate than others, with pads and sensors and such, but even the fanciest version is essentially a strap, a ratchet, and a latch.

And this is where things can get a little tricky. Just because there is such a thing as too simple and such a thing as too complex does not mean the best solution sits in a mythical sweet spot between simplistic and complicated, as if the territory in question could be represented by a single straight line. Reality is more complicated than that, and straight lines seldom make for interesting journeys. There are bends in the road we need to be aware of. If we overlook them we’ll either end up following the road to a bad part of town or jumping off the tracks entirely.
