Relative power for beta at the O1 and Cz sites was found to differ significantly between MZ and DZ 17-year-old twins. Given the number of statistical comparisons, coupled with the failure to find zygosity effects for the absolute power data, these two significant results are unlikely to reflect important differences in the EEGs of the MZ and DZ twins. Genetic Influences on the EEG To evaluate spectral similarity in the twins, we computed intraclass correlations for MZ and DZ twin pairs. In both age groups, all MZ intraclass correlations for both relative and absolute power spectra were significant (see Table 1).

Synapse elimination also begins to take place in later stages of development to further increase the specificity of neuronal functions. In this process, certain axons are eliminated but the neuron survives. The hypothesized decrease in Page 17 overall synaptic number and density may be manifested in the EEG by a decrease in absolute power, as seen in the 15- and 17-year-old adolescents in this study. The theory of developmental change in brain growth has also been supported by the findings of studies using methods such as magnetic resonance imaging (Jernigan, Trauner, Hesselink, & Tallal, 1991), and positron emission tomography (Chugani, Phelps, & Mazziota, 1987).
