Large parts of his long work survive; books 16, 17, and the opening sections of 18 offer a detailed account of the history of Philip II and Alexander, including episodes not otherwise recorded. For example, only Diodorus provides details on the confrontation between Alexander and the Thebans that exploded into the destruction of one of the most storied cities of ancient Greece. Scholars have tended to criticize Diodorus as a confused copyist with no ideas of his own, but a careful reading reveals reasoned judgments on the meaning of history and people’s motives.
