A striking difference from the recent past was that little of this work was abstract: figurative imagery of all kinds reappeared, or was appropriated from previous art or popular culture. The market for contemporary art—embattled during the previous decades owing to antipathy from many artists and critics, and to the fact that much Performance, Conceptual, and Political Art was impossible to sell due to its being ephemeral, too complex, or too radical—welcomed this development with enthusiasm and relief.
In six broad sections and 135 smaller units— accompanied by a number of essays and footnotes— the work as a whole tracks in detail everything that Kelly's newborn male child ate and expelled, charts every act of caring, and maintains a diary of the artist's spontaneous thoughts as well as her more considered interpretations. By 1978, the project was documenting the child's learning to speak, starting school, his first questions about sexuality, and his beginning to write. By juxtaposing fragments of texts—the child's scrawl, records of his language-learning, the artist's diary for that day—Kelly shows these as signs of self making and of being constructed (she and her husband, artist Ray Barrie, named the child "Kelly Barrie").

The complexity and the quasi-sacred character of theYuendumu painting left Long's work looking like a thin, generalized, overblown gesture.
