The manufacture of composition cork really begins in the cork-producing countries. There the select grades o f cork waste are baled for shipment. The baled cork is brought to the United States in large freight boats. The bales vary in weight from about 150 to 200 pounds. T o maintain proper ballast much of the cork is piled on the ship's deck and heavier, denser freight is loaded into the ship's hold. Important corkreceiving ports in this country are located on the eastern seaboard. Different ports require somewhat different methods o f unloading a cargo o f cork.
In fact, the applications o f composition cork today are so extensive and multitudinous that almost everyone, whether he knows it or not, depends upon cork for some important service, either directly or indirectly, every day. The manufacture and use o f composition cork constitutes one of the largest and most important phases of the cork industry. Small pieces o f high quality corkwood no longer accumulate in the form o f waste. Trimmings, scrap and other small pieces are ground and screened into various sizes.
Another method is by oven-baking, which is slower and requires 4-6 hours at temperatures ranging from 500 to 6oo°F. Blocks of corkboard vary in dimensions and they are cut into slabs and trimmed.
