London: Phaidon Press, 1964. CHINA The history of China in the last fifty years has been violent and tragic, as the country has struggled to come to terms with historic problems alongside the rapid development of a modern industrial and consumer society. Its staggering rate of growth is reflected in the claim that China is now the second-largest economy in the world. Historically, Chinese architecture and design have shaped the world, along with Chinese arts and sciences. In the 20th century the Communists under Mao Zedong established strict controls over people, trade and culture, and China’s economy was a centrally planned system including collectivized agriculture, largely closed to international trade.

Meanwhile, Chinese fashion designers beginning to establish a worldwide reputation include Wu Haiyan, Zhang Tian’ai (with Tian Art) and Zhang Zhaoda (with his brand Mark Cheung). In 2006 Bund 18, a 1923 neo-classical bank, won a Unesco heritage award for its conversion into a high-end fashion store, including Lavie, Ji Cheng’s fashion label and Lu Kun’s menswear label Lukan. There is also a group of designers who have trained and now work abroad but retain a keen sense of Chinese identity in interior, product and graphic design.

Gropius attracted some of the most important art and design practitioners of the Modern Movement, including Wassily Kandinsky, Johannes Itten, Paul Klee and Herbert Bayer. Post-war histories of the 28 BAUHAUS Bauhaus stressed a single Modern Movement approach to design, a dedication to pure geometric forms based on the circle and the square, the primary colours of red, blue and yellow, modern materials and industrial production techniques. But that view edited out the complex and diverse arguments that beset the school, and the fact that the hardline Modernist position was always balanced by Expressionist theories, and in the case of Itten by a belief in mysticism and alternative religions.
