A palette knife is a great way to use acrylics because of the freedom and immediacy it gives. For an experiment, I had prepared a number of canvases with dark colors and rough textures. The texture was achieved with a printing roller and heavy body gel mixed with the paint. The effect was like cardboard and I wanted to retain this surface. I was careful to allow the textured surface to be part of the experience. This kept me loose and focused. I used gel medium to make the paint transparent in places like where the stream is icing over.

My palette is also rather limited to ensure a better impact. I gave accent and painted the movement of ground herbs to contribute to the oval design.
