As this book is primarily aimed at the smallholder, most of the projects described here centre on livestock containment or animal exclusion. Fencing for agriculture is based around two main styles: post and wire and post and rail, with both often combining to form a single enclosure in its own right. Regardless of what type of fence is going to be constructed, they all have one important thing in common where materials are concerned, each fence, without exception, contains intermediate stakes or intermediate posts inserted into the ground at 6ft (2m) intervals.

Heavy Grade This is used primarily for boundary fences or specification work and is particularly useful in areas where atmospheric pollution causes excessive corrosion or where the fence line is difficult to gain access to and repeat fencing is to be avoided. All heavy-grade wire is made to BS4102 and 443. B8/80/15: the heavyweight equivalent of C8/80/15. Supplied in 54yd (50m) rolls. Its specification is 32in (80cm) high with eight line wires and 6in (15cm) vertical spacings. B8/80/30: the heavyweight equivalent of C8/80/30.

This problem usually occurs when the excavation work reaches 18in (45cm). There are three methods that can be used to aid the process, but one of them involves kneeling and will require the use of knee protectors or a cushion. The easiest option is to use a pair of ‘Shoveholers’, because soil can be removed while the operator remains in a standing position (explained in Chapter 2). The next technique, and it is a trick of the trade, is to use two spades simultaneously. If the two are forced towards the opposite sides of the hole, waste matter can be lifted out by closing the ends together, trapping the soil between both the spades, as in the action of a Shoveholer.
