It is not always about reading for the direct relevance of the content to the project which you are doing: the research, the background facts, the analysis of the artist’s oeuvre. It might be about reading the rambles of the author, absorbing the anecdotes, immersing yourself in inspirational word art. Reading good writers helps you aspire to transcribe your ideas in ways that might be non-traditional, unorthodox, rule breaking, but goal shifting – thus doing your words, and your work, justice.

Understand what is required – some pointers are needed, but total comprehension is not always practical. Some, if not most, revelations will come on the journey. Initial thoughts, brainstorms, lists, mind maps … Understanding that this is an initial stocktake of ideas and what is known now. Lists – and where they will lead and where they need to go. Research – lots of different directions, lots of different types of research, but all linking back to a core. The writer needs to feel that nothing is wasted.

It does not have to be so. Doodles of drawings or writings are part of the journey, and contribute to the final work, but are not necessarily seen as finished pieces in themselves. So, while offering this visual process for writing, I am also not setting it in stone. It is meant to be liberating: different ways of doing different tasks for different people – but fluid, more instinctive, and always open to change. While this process might look as if it is solely geared to essays, it is not meant to be so.
