That was in June and they’d got a big sports field there, and that was all laid out with marquees and things. That was a Saturday, and we worked in the morning and we had to stay all day, and we were told that we had - well, they didn’t tell you you’d got to, but as near as that - to look after our laundry patients and see that they enjoyed the day - the races and the 38 AT THE GATE things. And we all got ourselves done up - we took our black stockings off and put light lisle ones on, and we had white shoes and we had all clean uniform, and we made sure we had a white apron, not a bleached one!

Certainly a number of people who were certified and spent much of their lives in Severalls were certified originally for quite minor reasons. Many staff, for instance, remembered one patient who was certified as a young man in the early months of Severalls’ opening: We had one patient here who was brought to Severalls from Chelmsford, he will always tell you, by these two men dressed in long black coats with tall black hats on.
