DYNAMICALLY CONTINUOUS INNOVATIONS Dynamically continuous innovations are conceived of as those which involve a technological 'step'. Although they are directly related to present technology, they are of sufficient magnitude to create a state of risk in which the potential adopter must evaluate the likelihood of occurrence of several possible alternative outcomes. By comparison with continuous innovations', which usually take the form of modifications of familiar products, dynamically continuous innovations typically represent an alternative or substitute for currently available products.

This being so, continuous innovations may be evaluated under conditions which approach uncertainty, and the incremental change may be represented as a smooth curve of the type depicted in Exhibit 3· I a. Innovation of this type is typical of traditional craft industries, and also of most consumer goods innovations. Numerically the great majority of innovations fall into this category.
