A possibility is that interaction between red cells and the column resulting in release of ADP from red cells (Salzmann 1977), induces platelet activation followed by a state of refractoriness of these platelets (Peerschke 1985). Further studies are required to clarify the cause of haemoperfusion related platelet function disturbance. However, considering the slight extent of inhibition of platelet aggregation, its clinical importance is probably limited. Which factors are responsible for the transient character of the proces of platelet sequestration?
